An Office Conversation

Posted July 9th, 2009 by Conrad

Yesterday we had a brief office conversation about politics. I don’t remember the whole conversation or how it went. I do remember that when I said “I prefer the european model of social democracy,” I was met with the following response:

That’s communism. Are you a mother #*!%*#& communist? Do you want us to be like Russia?

The ignorance of this comment did not shock me as much as the aggressiveness of his response. My words had hardly left my mouth when this venomous response was shot back at me. Perhaps I should get a TV so I can understand how everyone around here gets these ideas in their heads?

You said “social” and “democracy” in the same sentence. To them that means communist. I wouldn’t say he’s too far off base. He just shouldn’t have been a dick about it… you dirty communist

Be careful with what you say at work. I always feel there’s a clear line between business and pleasure. At the bar you can all be a socialist and they can all be “whores” and “buffoons”.

Yep, they DO get those ideas from teh internets, and Fox news. If you tried to explain to them that Sweeden or Norway is a socialist democracy — they would look at you uncomprehendingly.

Lets face it, they don’t even know that you can get to Norway from StP with an army. Or with a fleet, on the NC. What do you expect?

So, good for you for sticking to your guns — no need to back down as long as it doesn’t get out of hand. Lots of these folks have never been challenged, I expect, by a real person who was qualified to hold different opinions.

I disagree here. NO need to stick to your guns at work. You get paid to be passive? You should absolutely call people out on their shit wherever else you go, but not at work.

    That’s my two cents
