Glimpses of Texas: Part III

Posted February 27th, 2009 by Conrad

Here are a few more shocking things I have encountered during my days here in Beaumont, Texas.

  1. I ran into a woman at the grocery store. She looked about my age and was attractive. She approached me and asked if I new where the pizza sauce was. I did not but I said why not buy some tomatoe sauce and make your own. Simply buy some plain sauce add oregano and what ever else you want. I am not much of a cook, but I think that’s probably how you go about it. She had never heard of oregano before.
  2. In a conversation at a bar, I told the guy I was talking to that my brother was moving to China and that he was going to Thailand first for a short holiday. He said that was the same thing because Thailand is part of China ‘now.’ Not sure how I missed that one, but his tone indicated to me that he must have thought Thailand and China joined recently (at least in his life time). The same guy was sure Athens was in Italy.
  3. I am vegetarian, liberal, spiritual before religious, and I have recently started doing yoga. You can imagine what people here think of that.
  4. In Texas you cannot buy alcohol before 10am. I know every state has their own law about this, however, I was rather annoyed when I had to put back the assorted case I had picked out. My aunt, whom I was on the phone with at the time commented sarcastically that it must be so that you can’t drink before you go to church. The girl behind the counter told me that this law was for religious reasons. We both got a kick out of that. By contrast, in Louisiana which is 20 miles from here, you can buy hard liquor in the gas station whenever you want.
  5. I went with a guy from work and his neighbor to a martini and tapas bar in Beaumont. My buddy from work and I like this place and generally go there once a week or so. Well the other guy heard ‘topless’ instead of ‘tapas.’ He was very disappointed. He then proceeded to tell us all night about how good of a dancer he was and how he could take any girl home.

what kind of yoga are you doing? hatha, vinyasa, kundalini, chakra, bikram?
i want to try bikram it’s in an over 100 degree room.
i’m doing it too but @ the gym.

You remember Spencer Bernard? He was a NYC gamer/diplomacy friend of mine who moved to Dallas/FT Worth — had a lot of the same culture shock issues but I think he’s over that now. zalandris_at_yahoo_dt_com, IIRC — if you ever get out that way drop him a line, he’s good people.

To Jessica: I don’t know what kind. It’s called hot power yoga. It’s pretty hot in the room, but I do hear the word vinyasa a lot.

To DQ: I will keep that in mind if I end up in Dallas. The name rings a bell, but I can picture the face.

hot yoga = bikram, so that sounds like a mix of bikram and power yoga. power yoga is where the sequences are done in succession instead of pausing for aeons at each pose.
so in other words… that’s pretty hardcore.

Yes, it is very intense. It’s a strength building yoga and it’s hot in there. I am literally soaked with sweat by the end of it (even my socks are wet). I am getting better at it though. Today I only needed to rest once during the practice.

Vinyasa I am pretty sure translates directly into the word “flow” meaning you just simply move from one pose to the next and try not to be awkward about it hahah…. I instruct simple yoga at my gym Beaumont Health and Fitness. I’m assuming you must do this bikram yoga at the place next door

Kayla: I am at Beaumont Power Yoga. They call it hot power yoga. It’s supposed to be a strength building yoga.

cool thats what I thought… I just got a pass to go there next week to try out the heat to see if I would be interested in instructing there… it should be pretty funny for me since the closest I’ve come to hot yoga is taking my class outside by the pool :/ but I heard the Tapas Flow class was supposed to be amazing there so we’ll see how I do
