Since I am regularly surprised by lots of small little things here and there, I figured I would save up a few and put them into one entry for you. Sometimes it’s the little things that reall give you a flavor of life in a place, and I didn’t want anyone to miss out on all the interesting things that aren’t quite entry worthy, so here is the first batch.
1. One of my coworkers came into work on Monday and proceeded to tell us that her neighbors were mad at her. Why we asked. She had apparently spent her Sunday afternoon sitting in her backyard drinking beer all day shooting squirrels out of trees with her rifle.
2. Camouflaged beer cans. I wish I had a picture but I only saw these once and I didn’t have my camera with me at the time. I guess when you are hunting you don’t want the animals to see you drink. Or you don’t want your friends finding your beer and drinking it before you can.
3. I still can’t quite believe this actually happened here where I live. This is the kind of news story you read about in weird news, or strange but true, or something like that. Apparently, two drug deals tried to sell a bag of crushed up tortillas as crack cocaine. After the money had changed hands ($2,000), they told them it was a trick, pulled out guns on their customer and kicked him out of the car. Unfortunately for these dealers, the guy they had just sold $2,000 worth of tortillas to was an undercover cop. a police chase followed and the bad guys were eventually arrested. 4. Whenever I tell local people here I am from New York, they almost always respond with: “New York City!” They are of course referencing Pace’s thick and chunky salsa commercials that aired in 1990 (yes almost 20 years ago). I have had as many as three people in unison say that to me. It got old the second time. For those of you that forgot, here is the commercial that is apparently so famous in southeast Texas.
5. The movie, ‘Taken’ came out here last week. I caught a few previews for it and it seemed really familiar. I could have sworn I had seen it already. It was either that or I was having the worst case of deja vu in the history of the world. I didn’t realize what was happening until I was taling to some locals in a bar and they complained to me that the theatre here typically has movies weeks or months after their official release date. I did some research and it turns out I saw it in Turkey last May or June (official Turkish release date was May 9th, 2009). The official release date was sometime in January 2009, so the Beaumont theatre wasn’t too far off. The thought of a movie theatre not having the new releases on the official day seems strange to me though. I suppose since there are no other theatres around, there is no competition, so they can release them whenever they want.
