Ready for Work!

Ready for Work!

So this is me on an almost typical day at work. In order I am wearing:

A. Dark safety glasses. Before 8am and on night shifts we cannot wear the dark ones. They obviously protect your eyes from flying debris. We are also required to have goggles on us at all times. They attach to your hard hat so it’s not a problem to carry them around.

B. Pens and Paper. When I am out in the field, I need to make notes and sometimes I need to mark pipes or columns or equipment when I am explaining work that needs to be done.

C. H2S Monitor. This monitor beeps when there is H2S in the air (a deadly gas that is present in refineries). I only have to wear this when I go into the active refinery, which I did on this particular day. Usually I don’t need one of these.

D. Harness. Whenever you are more than six feet off the ground you need a harness with lanyards and a fall arrestor. It’s heavy (and hot in the summer) and not terribly comfortable. We have two lanyards so that we can be tied off to something at all times.

E. FRC Jump suit. FRC stands for fire resistant clothing. Again I don’t normally have to wear this, but I was in the active refinery this particular day and you have to wear these at all times.

F. You cannot see it but I am wearing steel-toed boots, another requirement. Also, I often carry drawings with me when I am out in the field.

G. Gloves. You have to have gloves on you in case you need to go climbing around on something or move something.

H. I screwed up here and pointed to my FRCs a second time. So let’s say Nextel radio. We all have radios that are connected to the Nextel network. They are great. Makes getting a hold of someone so easy.

I. Hard hat (with shade visor). Self-explanatory.

The black stuff under my eyes is part of some safety initiative we were doing that week. Don’t worry about it.
