Last weekend I went to Seattle, Washington to play in a Diplomacy tournament at the washington athletic club (WAC). For those of you that do not know me, Diplomacy is a game that I am very passionate about and that I play all of the US and all over the world. My brother and I both went and played this past weekend in Seattle. It was an excellent tournament and we all had a lot of fun. It was exhausting, but worth the trip. My brother will be moving to China to teach English there for six months. You can follow his journy on his blog.
I did well in the Seattle tournament. I finished fourth, which wins me part of my ticket to the WAC’s next tournament in Paris, France. I look forward to attending. It will most likely be in August of 2010. I will let the pictures tell the story of my weekend. Half the pictures are from me, and the better half are from another player named Siobhan. Enjoy!
Jim saying hi during the saturday night round.
Siobhan, one of the other players/photographers saying hi. And yes, girls do play this game.
Jon, another player/photographer and fellow vegetarian. I think he finished just ahead of me in the tournament.
My arch enemy. This guy drove me nuts. There was just no negotiating with him.
Mark, the tournament organizer. He’s the one who got us access to the WAC. I think Mark ended up spending a lot of money organizing this tournament so a big thanks to him.
Matt was the “powerful tool” who tracked all the scores and calculated the results. Nathan on the left was the tournament director.
My brother and I.
Edi, the grand master of the game. He’s contributed more to the hobby than anyone else in history.
Jon is explaining to Chris why he’s so upset. I am pretty sure I caused his aggravated state, although I did so rather indirectly.
A game in action. Players negotiating over the map.
Jon trying to chat up two ladies at the bar. Emphasis on the trying.
Eric, my brother and Jim being drunk and silly at a local bar.
Graham giving Adam a piggy back ride. I thought this was the gayest moment of the weekend (it’s nearly an al guys hobby so gay jokes are inevitable), until…
Adam invited a bunch of the guys staying in the presidential suite into his bed. He’s in the middle of the pile with his head buried.
1am pizza order to the presidential suite. Followed by immediate food comas. If only there ws beer too.
My brother and I.
Jim and his hat.
Jim my brother and myself. Mamosa, bloody mary, bloody mary, respectively.
A bloody mary with olives ok. Put a bean in? Jim stared at the three vegetables all morning knowing something brillant could be done with them. Given his hangover, it wasn’t until the end of breakfast that he came up with this gem. He carried around his creation all day.
We were all very tired. Buffalo passed out during the awards ceremony.
Lastly, remember all the car trouble I have been having? I got home Monday night and found my rental car with a flat tire in the parking lot. Rental company said I have to pay to replace or repair the tire. Could my luck get any worse?
Here’s the whole gallery. There are a bunch of pictures from around Seattle as well as the above pictures.

Nice. Nothing like getting home to a flat tire on a friggin rental.
I, on the other hand, finished my long run tonite (in the dark, fer chrissakes) only to find that Shelden had left the parking lot where we had left the car. THAT sucked too. He was back in 15 minutes, but it was below freezing and my feet were soaked from running through ice-coated puddles, so it was a loooong fifteen minutes. Gratz on a good tourney!
