Weekend trip: Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Posted January 23rd, 2009 by Conrad

This past weekend, because of Martin Luther King Jr day, and the fact that my job is only four days a week, I had a four day weekend. So I drove to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to visit a friend from school. It was a three hour drive through totally flat swamps and plains, but the weather was nice, and the drive was actually kind of fun. It was, as always, good to see an old friend.

Flat. Very flat. The entire way, I don’t think I went over one hill except when there was an overpass. I wanted to take pictures of raised road through the swamp, but I was too busy looking for myself. The road is completely straight, completely flat and about 30 feet above the swamp. And it goes as far as you can see.

It may look like it’s not flat, but trust me it is. I am just on an overpass in this picture.

I had to do a double take on this one. Fortunately I got my camera out in time to snapshot this guy taking his pig somewhere on the highway.

A road side farm stand. This was the first farm stand I have ever seen that takes food stamps.

This picture shows the two frozen pina colada’s that we got before heading home. Apparently in Louisiana, you can have an open container in the car as long as it’s a frozen drink and the straw hasn’t broken the surface of the drink. I was skeptical when someone told me this, but sure enough, the bars offered lots of frozen drink options.

All in all it was a fun weekend. Baton Rouge looked like a cool city and I am hoping I get to explore it more. The restaurant we went to with my friend’s friends was a Cajun place that had two vegetarian items on the menu: green salad and a house salad. I did get hounded by everyone when they found out I was a vegetarian. I am not sure why, but some people seem bothered by my choice not to eat meat. It was somewhat frustrating; I thought I left that mentality when I graduated from university. Maybe it’s an insult down here.
